What is the role of the Guidance and Counselling Department?
The Guidance and Counselling Department supports students in their personal wellbeing, education, and career planning throughout their time at St Mel’s College. The aim is to help each student feel supported, make informed choices, and reach their full potential.
What types of support are available?
Support is provided in three main areas:

Which students can access guidance and counselling?
All students in St Mel’s College, from first year to sixth year, can access guidance support. Some supports are delivered to all students, while others are provided to individuals or small groups depending on need.
How is guidance provided?
Guidance is delivered through:

One-to-one meetings with the Guidance Counsellor

The school’s Careers Programme may include:

What is the Student Support Team (SST)?
The Student Support Team (SST) meets weekly to discuss student wellbeing and ensure appropriate supports are in place.
The team includes:

Principal and Deputy Principal

Year Heads

Additional Educational Needs (AEN) staff

Home School Community Liaison (HSCL)
The SST works together to make sure concerns are followed up in a structured, caring, and timely way.
How can a student be referred for support?
Referrals can happen in several ways:

A student can self-refer to the Guidance Counsellor

A parent or guardian can contact the Year Head, Guidance Department, AEN team, HSCL, or school management

Staff members may raise concerns through the Student Support Team
All referrals are handled sensitively and with the student’s wellbeing as the priority.
Will my child’s privacy be respected?
Yes. Guidance and counselling are provided in a confidential and respectful manner, in line with professional guidelines and child protection procedures. Information is shared only when necessary to support the student’s safety and wellbeing.
What if my child needs extra or specialist support?
Some students may need more intensive support due to personal difficulties or challenging circumstances. In these cases:

Support is provided by trained staff within the school

The school may recommend referral to external services, where appropriate

The school continues to support the student in partnership with families and external agencies
Is guidance only for students who are struggling?
No. Guidance is for all students, not just those experiencing difficulties. Many students meet the Guidance Counsellor to discuss subject choices, career options, or future plans.
