1st Year Science
1st Year Class Ash prepared a saturated solution of copper sulphate in Science Class last Thursday. The solution was left to cool and crystallise over the weekend. The boys were delighted with the yield of crystals obtained today. They were even more excited to announce that their copper sulphate crystals resembled Lapis Lazuli, a gem they know from the video game Minecraft #Science #MakingCrystals

TY Be the Boss
Our TY students had a fantastic visit to Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) today, where they took part in the Be the Boss business simulation event. The experience offered valuable insight into leadership, strategic decision making and the realities of running a business, while also giving students the opportunity to engage with lecturers, students and industry professionals.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Seadna Ryan, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Hospitality, for providing such a personalised and welcoming student experience. Thank you also to the TUS team for the informative campus tour and the opportunity to explore your wonderful facilities. We are very lucky to have such an outstanding university on our doorstep.

Sergeant Niall Kilcrann visit
We were delighted to welcome back past pupil Sergeant Niall Kilcrann who returned to St. Mel’s College to speak with our 5th Year students about careers in the Defence Forces.
It was a privilege to hear him reflect on his time as a student in St. Mel’s and to learn how those years helped shape the path he has taken since. He spoke openly about his journey from the classrooms and corridors of St. Mel’s to his current role in the Defence Forces, outlining the opportunities, challenges, and career progression he has experienced along the way.
Our students greatly appreciated his honest and inspiring insights into life in the Defence Forces, including the wide range of career paths available, the importance of commitment and resilience, and the personal development that comes with serving.
As part of his visit, Niall made a special presentation of a commemorative plaque to our Deputy Principal, Jimmie Gacquin, a gesture we sincerely appreciate and one that reflects the strong and lasting connection he maintains with our school community.
Subject Choice Peer Networking
We recently held a very successful Subject Choice Peer Networking Event at St. Mel’s. Our 5th Year students generously gave their time to speak with 3rd Year and Transition Year students about the subjects on offer for next year.
They shared their experiences, offered honest advice, and answered questions to help younger students make informed and confident subject choices. Hearing directly from senior students provided valuable insight into subject content, workload, and exam expectations.
A sincere thank you to all of our 5th Year students for their enthusiasm, maturity, and willingness to support others. Your contribution made the event both informative and inspiring!
