Match Report: St. Mel’s V St. Pat’s

St. Mel’s U-14 football team put on a spirited performance on Wednesday 17th of October to beat St. Pats of Navan 4-15 to 5-9 in the second round of the North Leinster competition.

St. Mel’s started the first half strong with points coming from Matthew Flynn, Gavin Farrelly, Ronan Courtney and Seamus Walsh to secure an early lead. There was no let up as the St. Mel’s forwards continued to put pressure on the opponents kick outs to obtain possession and to run at the St. Pat’s defence. As St. Mel’s became more confident on the ball, they created some excellent opportunities in front of the goal which Andy Devine and David Moorehead capitalised on.

St. Pat’s responded late in the first half by scoring 2-1. However, a dominant first half saw St. Mel’s lead 2-12 to 2-1 at half time.

St. Pats had a much stronger start in the second half and caused havoc in the St. Mel’s defence scoring 2 early goals which put them back in the game. The St. Mel’s defence had their backs to the wall as St. Pat’s continued to pop the ball over the bar until the sides drew level.

It was a tense final 10 minutes as both teams battled hard in all positions on the pitch. However, it was a late goal by David Moorhead in the final 2 minutes of the game saw St. Mel’s take the win. The St. Mel’s boys displayed great character and team spirit to come out victorious.
