The new Sports Year begins in St Mel’s College

The Sports year started in earnest this week with a number of the school teams in action

The senior and Junior Basketball teams travelled to play Colaiste Iosagain in the first games of the Midland A leagues. In the Junior game the team has a great battle with a good home team and in the end the team lost narrowly on a score line of 50 to 48.

In the senior game the home side boasted two international players and they dominated early on but St Mel’s rallied to be only 2 down after the first quarter. It was a tough start for the team and in the end they were defeated 59 -47.

Mr McWeeney is being helped this year by our two student teachers Miss Sweeney and Miss Murphy.

a big boost also is the news that Tadhg McNiven has been chosen on the Irish International squad for the coming season.


The senior Soccer team played their first game away v Strokestown and they came back with a well merited 4-4 draw with the scorers being Cian Dooner,Isac Abankwah, and two from Darragh O connell. Mr O connell was happy with the first outing of the season.

The Gaelic football teams also had a busy week with the U-14 team having a fine home win v St Mary’s Eddenderry in the first round of the North Leinster A league. this team are trained by Mr Garvey and Miss Cassidy.

The U-16 team had two games against Moyne C.s and Cnoc Mhuire ,Granard as they prepare for the first round of the North Leinster Championship. The team is coached by Mr Rooney and Mr O Shea.

The Senior team travelled to Moate Community College to play the first round of the North Leinster League and came away with a good win on a score line of 1-12 to 1-11. The Team are coached this year by mr Quinn and mr cannon and the draw for the Leinster Championship has pitted them against Marist College, Athlone and St Peter’s College Wexford with fixtures to be played in mid November.

Our Rugby teams are out training under the guidance of of former student Dylan Quinn and long term coach Steve Coy. Its hoped to emulate the success of the senior team of 2017/18.
