St Mel’s Swim Team in Connaught Finals

The St Mel’s College Swim team are off to compete in the Connaught Schools Championships at the weekend. There are more than 12 students competing for the school and the swimmers were presented with their customized Swim Caps in the school on Friday.

Congratulations to our swim team who represented St. Mel’s with distinction at the Connacht Senior Schools Championshipsin Tuam yesterday. In the face of stiff competition, many of our swimmers recorded personal best times.

There was a superb performance from the Medley Relay team of Diarmuid O’Donnell (Backstroke), Alan Dzaei (Breaststroke), Cian McCormack (butterfly) and Robert Ziemelis (freestyle) to take silver medal in the u16 final. Indeed the same four swimmers were unlucky to miss out on the bronze medal in the freestyle relay by just 0.09 seconds.

But pride of place must go to Cian McCormack (1st year) on taking the bronze medal in the 100m breaststroke final and then going on to become Connacht champion by winning the 100m butterfly event. Cian will now represent Connacht in the Interprovincial Competition in the New Year.
