Basketball Success for St Mel’s

Well done to our two basketball teams who recorded well-deserved victories over Colaiste Choilm Tullamore in the Midland A League yesterday.

The u16s were 1st to take the court and although the teams were level at the end of the opening quarter, St Mel’s great teamwork started to exploit gaps in the visitor’s defense and after a strong quarter they led by 8 points at half time. But it was the visitors who dominated the 3rd period to lead by 3 points going into the final quarter. However as the lead changed hands several times in the final period, St Mel’s held their nerve to secure the crucial baskets and prevailed by the narrowest of margins on a scoreline on 41-40. The final pool game for this team will take place this Friday at home to Rathangan.

In the senior match, although St Mel’s raced into an early lead, Tullamore soon got back into the game and for most of the match only a few points separated the sides. However St Mel’s started to take control in the final stages of the game and ran out winners 52-42.

Well done to Mr McWeeney and all who work so hard to keep Basketball at such a healthy level in the school.
