Well done to our 1st Year Basketball team who registered their 1st win in the league against Colaiste Iosagain, Portarlington. After a nervous start by both teams, St Mel’s got their defenc well organised and held the visitors scoreless during the entire 2nd quarter to lead by 10 points. They remained in control for the remainder of the game to win on a score of 20-11.

The 2nd years had their 1st defeat of the year against the same opposition. Despite trailing by just two points after a solid 1st quarter, the scoring dried up against a strong zone defence and the team trailed by 8 points at halftime. Although St. Mel’s managed to stay in touch throughout the 3rd quarter, the well-drilled visiting team opened up a comfortable lead in the final quarter to win by 20 points in the end.

The two teams travelled to Rathangen to play the local school in 1st and 2nd year competition and were delighted to return home with two wins which keeps both teams in contention for a semi final spot after the mid term break. Well done to coach Mr McWeeney who works with both teams and his knowledge of the game is giving the boys the opportunity to improve from week to week.
